A glimpse into jake wong
I believe the personality that is reflected through my actions and my lifestyle is rather positive and holds many beneficial traits. I pride myself with punctuality and feel that as long as I have an obligation to be somewhere or that my absence will hinder others, I must arrive there on time. Along with punctuality, personal planning is very important to me, since I can reduce stress from specific assignments or responsibilities by scheduling it out for myself and following said schedule on the mark. Although I know how to plan out my own responsibilities, I must admit that I am not the most active person when it comes to social events. I was just never the most extroverted person, and I don’t think I ever will be. However, through my work at a fast food restaurant, I’ve learned a lot more about different types of people and how to talk and handle people with respect and courtesy. I’ve come to adopt a personal philosophy of pacifism and respecting others on a neutral ground, as no one deserves to be disrespected without any provocation. The future may not be very clear to me as of yet, but I have an idea of how to go forward and hopefully by focusing on the present, the path to my future will pave itself.
Through my experiences in school, I can definitely say my favorite and most proficient skills are with math and science, which I plan to major in when attending college. I believe my analysis skills in those subjects are very strong, because of my ability to absorb new material and apply it to my past knowledge to master it. I think the reason why my proficiency lies in those subjects is because I myself am a very linear and forward thinker; I enjoy things that have a straight answer and one specific way to find the answer. Therefore, subjects such as english and social studies are more of a challenge to me. Reading different texts and analyzing them to find a deeper meaning is something that I like to say that I can do, but I am not the best at. The same goes for my writing, which I think is good in a literal sense (syntax and vocabulary), but not as much in a deep intellectual sense. However, I still enjoy topics in social studies because I like to think about philosophy and why our world works how it does, including things like human psychology and why people did what they did in history. It is this drive that makes me very interested in current events and drives me to become more active in our society. The skills I would say that I lack severely are art. I like to think I am creative in some sense, but when I try to depict said creativity, I fail miserably. I don’t feel as though this trait hinders me, but it is definitely a skill that I would rather improve.
My reasoning and logic skills, as I stated before, are the skills I am the most proud of, and also the ones that attending ACLC has helped me improve. The way our classes operate and facilitators teach really guides us on how to learn, rather than pushing us to learn. These skills are where my interest in math and science derives from. I am a rather linear person, and I enjoy going through problems and finding solutions, as it makes me feel accomplished and exercises my brain. However, I understand that thinking is not only logical. One must be able to think creatively and liberally in order to truly succeed in our world. While I may not be the most artistic person, I believe that creativity also is derived from flowing thoughts, such as through philosophy, and I tend to think a lot about the state of our world and different ways our society could change, which I attribute to the creative side of my mind. As a rather indecisive person, making decisions is a little more difficult for me because I tend to look at both choices or sides of an argument and see the good in both. However in the end, I am unable to choose between which would be the most beneficial. However, I don’t necessarily see indecisiveness as a bad thing, since having an open mind is a necessity to understanding other people.
For collaboration and working with others, having an open mind is an absolute necessity. If you cannot understand another person’s opinion, then you will never be able to work together. I find that when working with others, I tend to sit back a little and let others with more passion take the lead, but I don’t like to get isolated and for my ideas and contributions to be heard. I won’t stay back when others are ignorant in fields that I can comprehend. I step up and inform the group of what they need to know so altogether, we can be on an even playing field and proceed with coordination. Teamwork and cooperation is also very important in my work at a fast food restaurant as well, especially working with customers. Being able to treat complete strangers with respect, especially when they may not treat you the same way, can be hard but definitely doable, and in the end it’s all about being able to supply them with what they want and need, as with anyone you are cooperating with. I’m not going to say I am perfect and can satisfy everyone’s needs, but I definitely know my limits and try my best, so that I can do my work to my own expectations.
Growing up in the 21st century, technology has become something that no one can live without, myself included. Our society no longer functions without access to Internet or a smartphone in each person’s hand. Some may argue it is a bad thing, but personally I think it is just us as a society evolving and we as people need to evolve as well. I understand what kind of technology is necessary for what, for instance I find it illogical to write an essay on your phone, or bring a gaming device to class. I understand when to use technology as well as what to use it for. When I begin my work on my computer, I am sure to close distracting tabs and turn off other devices that bother me. There is no need to go on Facebook when working on math homework, for instance. However, I am not the most tech savvy person, but in most cases, I find that troubleshooting broken technology or problems with it is very similar to simple puzzles that apply my logical brain power to solve. Most of the times I use past experience, or other times just use hints based on the cause of the problem or the problem itself to find the solution.
